Tesla Internet Not Working in Europe? Connectivity Setup for Imported Vehicles

January 10, 2026ConnectivityLTEEuropeImported Tesla

Why US-imported Teslas often lose internet connectivity in Europe, what the SIM situation looks like, and how we restore connectivity for navigation, updates, and app access.

Tesla Has No Internet in Europe β€” Here's Why and What We Do About It

A US-imported Tesla that goes offline in Europe is one of the more annoying things to land in the workshop. The car drives fine, but navigation goes dumb, the app disconnects, software updates stop arriving, and suddenly half the car feels broken.

The root cause is the SIM. Tesla's built-in LTE modem runs on a carrier-provisioned SIM tuned for North America. In Europe, that SIM either has no coverage or no roaming agreement β€” the modem powers on but there's nothing to connect to.

It's Not Always the Same Fix πŸ”

Before we touch anything, we check what modem generation the car has and what SIM type it uses. Some vehicles have a standard physical SIM that can be swapped out. Others have an eSIM that needs to be reconfigured at the software level. Getting this wrong wastes time.

What We Usually Do

Physical SIM replacement β€” if the car has a swappable SIM, we replace it with a European-compatible one and configure the network settings. Has to be done in person at our workshop.

eSIM reconfiguration β€” if the modem uses an embedded SIM, we switch the profile through Tesla's service tools. Depending on the car's software state, this can sometimes be done remotely.

Network config fix β€” sometimes the modem and SIM are fine but the network profile is misconfigured. This is a software-only fix and works well in a remote session.

What Helps to Know Before You Reach Out

  • Model and year
  • Is the car completely offline, or does WiFi work but not LTE?
  • Does navigation route correctly when connected to a phone hotspot?
  • Does the Tesla app show the car as offline?

That hotspot question is useful β€” if navigation works via hotspot but not on its own, it's a connectivity-only issue. If maps are broken even with a hotspot, there's a regional config issue on top.

Remote or On-Site?

Software fixes (eSIM profile, network config) β€” usually remote. Physical SIM replacement β€” needs to come to our workshop. We'll tell you which it is before you make the trip.
