Tesla Won't Navigate in Europe? How to Install EU Maps on an Imported Tesla
Why US-imported Teslas show blank or wrong maps in Europe, and what the process looks like to get navigation working properly — including what can be done remotely.
Imported Tesla Showing Blank Maps in Europe — How We Fix It
Navigation on a US-imported Tesla in Europe usually lands in one of three states: blank map with no roads, wrong continent entirely, or GPS that works but routes you nowhere useful. It's not a GPS hardware problem — that chip is the same worldwide. It's a configuration issue.
North American Teslas are built with a regional profile locked to North America. When you bring that car to Europe, it doesn't know to look for EU map data. And in most cases, it won't figure that out on its own.
Why It Won't Just Update Itself
A common assumption is that connecting to WiFi and waiting will eventually pull EU maps. Sometimes it does — if the car's Tesla account and regional profile are already aligned to Europe. But for most imported vehicles, the region is locked at the software level and the car simply won't request EU maps, regardless of internet access.
What Actually Gets Fixed 🗺️
Once maps are sorted, roads and addresses work correctly in Europe, Supercharger locations on the map are European, live traffic pulls from European sources, and time zone and unit defaults fall into line. GPS positioning accuracy doesn't change — it was already working. What changes is everything the navigation system builds on top of it.
Can It Be Done Remotely?
Often yes. We push the regional reconfiguration and trigger the map download via a remote session. You need the car on WiFi (the download needs that), and you'll need to be at the car to operate the touchscreen at a couple of points.
Some cases still need in-person service — older models, unusual software states, or vehicles where connectivity needs to be sorted first. No internet access means no map download, so if the car is completely offline, we handle that first.
Before You Book
It helps to have:
- Model and year
- Software version (Controls → Software)
- What the map screen shows — blank, wrong region, or an error
- Whether the Tesla app shows the car online
The service itself takes 1–2 hours hands-on. Map download runs in the background while we wrap up.
